Garth “Gonzo” Brow
Flint, Michigan doesn’t necessarily register as a motorcycling hot bed for many, but it produced loads of quality talent throughout the golden ages of Grand National competition. Garth “Gonzo” Brow was one of
the many flat trackers that honed his craft in the Wolverine state, cutting his teeth at local short track and ice racing events. Brow burst onto the national scene in the novice class in 1975, breaking the record for most wins that still stands to this day. The Bultaco supported rider went on to find the same sort of success in the expert division, winning the first national of his career at the infamous Ascot Speedway in record breaking fashion. He was considered by many to be one of the most naturally talented riders of his era never to get a fully fledged factory ride, but he still got a one-off opportunity with Harley Davidson to prove his speed at San
Jose in 1981 and he went on to win the main event that evening. Brow currently resides in Tampa Bay, Florida and works a regular job, but he claims that he’ll still race anybody. He still harbors the same passion for motor- cycle racing and regularly competes in local short track events, living with his wife Rhonda who has been with him at the races since they were sixteen years old. We caught up with Garth to reflect on his racing career, coming up with his own nickname, and what it feels like to get a win at Ascot.
