Wily veteran Nick Wey entered Santa Clara looking to get another solid top fifteen finish. He
has finished inside that fifteenth spot in both races he has been in so far this season, which is remarkable for a rider of his age because he essentially jumped off the couch right into the thick of the series. He began the day at Levi’s Stadium with a solid nineteenth fastest qualifying effort
and was ready to compete for a spot in the main event.
Wey would not get off to the best of starts in his heat race and would only manage to climb to a tenth place finish and a trip to the semi. He must have figured out what he did wrong on the start in his heat race because he silinghsotted out to a holeshot in the semi. It was great to see a guy like Wey get off to a great start like that and lead the field around for a lap. He would get passed and shuffled back to fourth place around the halfway point but he stopped the bleeding and remained there until the end of the race. That fourth place was more than enough to get Wey to the main event where he would try to make it two holeshots in a row. Wey would not get out to another holeshot in the main event. In fact it was nearly the opposite as he got hung up by a crash in the first turn and would come around lap one in sixteenth place. The young guns would have their way with Wey as he could never really gain his footing resulting in him losing positions instead of gaining. The Michigan Mafia member would come out of the main with an eighteenth place finish. He has to be bummed he couldn’t make it three top fifteens in a row but he will look to rebound next weekend closer to home as the season storms into Indianapolis.
