Turkeys Are Terrorizing A Texas Retirement Community North of Georgetown
By Steven Santana
Leadership in a retirement com- munity in Georgetown are scrambling for a solution as senior citizens are being intimidated, harassed and chased into their own homes. The
culprits? A group of wild
turkeys that have grown accus- tomed to the peo- ple over the years as people in the community over the age of 55 fed the birds, Texas Monthly reports.
Sun City is a community just
north of Georgetown anch ored by a golf course that was founded by the Del Webb Company, which bought over 7,000 acres of land in
1994, according to the neighbor- hood's
website. Texas
Monthly reports that the turkeys spent most of their time in the surrounding wooded area known as Berry Creek, where res- idents would meet them on the hiking trails.
Then, last sum- mer, the turkeys
would stand in the middle of roads in Sun City and peck at cars that would stop for them. If the cars pulled away, the turkeys would give chase. Some groups would even block the driveway. Most people in the community agree that the problems stem from people feeding the turkeys, Texas Monthly reports.
Now the turkeys are getting vio- lent. Residents call the turkeys "renegades." Joan Altshuler, 78, told Texas Monthly that turkeys chased her onto her porch after they rammed her in her kidney area. The turkeys blocked Altshuler from leaving her porch.
"The turkeys bar- ricaded me,” she says. "They wouldn’t let me get down. Then they got bored
and started going off in another direction. I started slinking around the side of the house, and I started throwing rocks from the garden."
