Jasper, County, Miss. (WLBT/Gray News) –
Several monkeys used for animal testing were shot and killed after a truck carrying them overturned in Mississippi on Tuesday after- noon.
According to
the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, the crash hap- pened on Interstate 59 near mile marker 117, which is north of Heidelberg, Mississippi.
The truck was carrying Rhesus monkeys to a testing facility in Florida from Tulane University in New Orleans.
Initial information from the sheriff’s
office said the monkeys were said to be carry- ing hepatitis C, herpes and COVID. They were described as 40 pounds and “aggressive” to humans, requiring personal protec- tive equipment to handle.
Officials said if the monkeys left the wreck site, they must be shot.
However, Tulane University disput- ed information about the mon- keys having infec- tious diseases.
Tulane University released the fol- lowing statement: “Non-human pri- mates at the Tulane National Biomedical Research Center are provided to other research
organizations to advance scientific discovery. The primates in ques- tion belong to another entity and are not infectious. We are actively collaborating with local authorities and will send a team of animal care experts to assist as needed.”
The sheriff’s office initially said all the monkeys escaped the truck and all but one of them were shot, but, in an updated post, authorities report- ed three monkeys were still on the loose as of Tuesday after- noon.
Mississippi Wildlife and Fisheries also responded to the site with local law enforcement.
