Annex 4: BRHS TOT workshop news release
Moving towards a resilient health system in Sudan
Khartoum, 10 March 2019 -- The World Health Organization (WHO), Sudan Federal Ministry of
Health (FMOH), and the Royal Tropical Institute- Amsterdam (KIT) concluded a 2-week training
for trainers (TOT) on Strengthening Decentralized Health System to attain Universal Health
Coverage (UHC) projects in Sudan.
The TOT, which was held in the National Medical Supplies Fund Training Center in Khartoum,
was attended by 40 national capacities and health system professionals from various FMOH
departments, States Ministries of Health, the National Health Insurance Fund, and Academicians.
The course will enable the participants to use its knowledge and modules to conduct resilient health
system training for health management teams in the various Sudan localities using a standardized
module modified to meet the local needs of the population there.
“Building resilient health system in Sudan is among WHO and the Government of Sudan priorities
and engaging local communities is central to these joined endeavors,” said Dr. Naeema Al Gasseer
WHO Representative in Sudan.
“We are joining efforts, mobilizing available resources, and collaborating with the world most
experienced institutions to achieve this goal by end of this year. We have to acknowledge here the
role of Japan in contributing to the implementation of this important project,” Dr. Al Gasseer
added.
“We are happy with the high level of technical experts present to support us in this workshop and
ready to exhaust all efforts to ensure the translation of the knowledge and skills gained for the
benefit of the people of Sudan,” said Prof Babikir Kaballo, Undersecretary of the Federal Ministry
of Health. “The diversity of facilitators will assist participations to revise and modify the curriculum
and practice the presentations with advanced scientific feedback” he added.
The course addressed a wide range of topics including analysis of health system, health system and
social determinants of health, Health in All Policies, and UHC and Primary Health Care (PHC). It
also approached other areas like health services planning and stakeholders mapping, health system
challenges and response strategies, health resources allocation, financing, and human resources,
medicine and medical supplies management, information use for decision making, in addition to
governance and community engagement.
WHO support the strengthening of the decentralized health system to attain UHC in Sudan
through a project facilitated by the generous contribution from the Government of Japan.
