           On Sunday, August 18th, the National Center for the
          Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture at
                                               th
          Alabama State University presented its 16  Annual Pa-
          trons and Donors Reception at the Levi Watkins Learning
          Center.


          The National Center  was honoring  the patrons  who pro-
          vide  support  for  its  activities  as  well  as  the  donors  who
          have provided historical artefacts which contribute to the
          mission  of  the  center.  Seated  in  the  audience  was  Mrs.
          Alice Gooden, who is the Historian for the Patrons of the
          National Center, busily recording the events of the after-
          noon as a part of her responsibility.                             The inscription on the award reads

          Much to her surprise, Master of Ceremonies, Dr. Howard           Presented to Mrs. Alice S. Gooden,
          Robinson  II,  announced  that  the  recipient  of  this  year’s  In Recognition of Your Exemplary Record of Public Service to the
          Citizen  of  the  Year  Award,  is  Mrs.  Alice  Gooden.  The      Patrons of the National Center
          expression of surprise on Soror Gooden’s face proved that
          she had no idea that she would be receiving an honor at
