“But alas,” the old wise man said, “It took so very long to make all of them and now I am too old to go about distributing them. You are a young man and a peddler by trade. I will give you all of these glasses, enough to fill your wagon, if you will promise to continue selling them until the last one is sold.”
The Peddler continued his story, “Of course I was terribly excited, particularly after the old man trained me how to use the glasses. I could not imagine anyone not wanting them. The old man spent his last few weeks on earth teaching me and I left feeling obligated to live up to my part of the bargain.
To my surprise, selling the glasses proved to be very difficult, no matter what the price I asked. I tried to sell them as I did my pots, door to door, town to town, with little success. As you have seen here in your kingdom, few people want to change and even fewer are willing to do the work necessary to be able to change.”
“Finally, I hit upon this idea of convincing the mayor, governor or king of wherever I was, of the value of the glasses. If they saw the value, they usually acted as you did and they bought enough for all of their subjects, thinking that their subjects would want to be as wise as their ruler.
But of course, just like you, Your Majesty, they found that few of their subjects wanted to keep the Glasses. Since they were of no value if no one wanted them, the rulers always gave the returned ones back to me, which enabled me to continue my journey to sell them again.”
