P. 44

Worksheet
You will go through the iden cal steps from the previous pages to show how the character of the Owl tries to manipulate using embarrassment and anxiety. This is the classic peer pressure technique of calling someone “chicken” or “stupid” to get them to do something they know is against their best interest.
You want your child to recognize that Young Girl was being told that she is not capable and that something terrible would happen (everything will die). You are looking for words that signify the nega ve emo ons of embarrassment, anxiety or feeling foolish.
Since many children have inadequate labels for their emo ons, you may need to coach them. Ask them if these are emo ons that they like? If they are describing how the Young Girl felt and if they had be her, would they be strong enough
to change their garden (probably not)? The consequence of this is that she is unhappy and is s ll stuck with the collards.
1. What did the Owl say to the girl when he found out that she planned to change the garden?
She was not smart enough and everything would die and she will starve
2. What did the girl think a er the Owl told her she was stupid and everything would die?
She was foolish for thinking about changing the garden
3. What emo ons did she feel a er the Owl told her what would happen if she changed the garden?
(She felt foolish or afraid or embarrassed, etc.)
4. What was her behavior toward changing the garden?
She did not change it
