Whitby Abbey
The Whitby town and its abbey are famous thanks to
Count Dracula: in the well known novel by Bram Stoker,
he meets Lucy Westenra here. It was founded back in
7th century and up to this day managed to gather
around itself a lot of secrets and legends. One of them
is about Saint Hilda, who turned all the snakes living in
Whitby into stones that became the foundation of the
monastery. When in the 16th century the abbey was
closed, according to legends, Hilda's spirit was often
seen here. All of a sudden abbey bells began ringing
and weird things occurred. Those bells were removed
and carried to a ship that soon sank under mysterious
circumstances near the shore. But even if this story has
nothing to do with reality, the Whitby Abbey is without a
doubt one of England's most beautiful sights.
