meaning he was blind in one eye. This was assessed as being a pre-existing condition that had been
exacerbated by his military service. He was also assessed to be of Good to Very Good character on
discharge. He was issued the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal for his
service.
The theatres of war he served in; (1) Balkan in 1915 - was fought between the Central Powers,

Allies, represented by France, Montenegro, Russia, Serbia, and the United Kingdom (and later
Romania and Greece, who sided with the Allied Powers) on the other side. (2) Egyptian E.F. in 1916 -
The Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF) was a British Empire military formation, formed on 10
March 1916 under the command of General Archibald Murray from the Mediterranean Expeditionary
Force and the Force in Egypt (1914 to 1915), at the beginning of the Sinai and Palestine Campaign of
the First World War (3) Egyptian in 1915 to 1916.
When the Maori Contingent arrived in Egypt, Major-General Sir Alexander Godley recommended that
the contingent go to Malta for further training and garrison duties, thus freeing up Pakeha troops for
combat, however with mounting casualties and the need for reinforcements on the Gallipoli Peninsula
forced a change in imperial policy on 'native peoples' fighting. The Maori Contingent landed at Anzac
Cove on 3 July 1915. Here they joined the New Zealand Mounted Rifles, who were being deployed as
infantry on the peninsula.
