2019 in Kaitaia at age 86, and was buried on 15 May 2019 in Rangihaukaha Urupa
Pukepoto. Another name for Hekenukumai was Hector Busby.

al) Hector Busby; Tohunga, Bridge builder, Navigator and traditional ship
builder in Aotearoa. He is recognised as a leading figure in the revival of traditional Polynesian
navigation and ocean voyaging using wayfinding techniques. He has built a number of traditional
waka, including the double-hulled Te Aurere which has sailed over 30,000 nautical miles in the
Pacific Ocean including Hawai'i, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, New Caledonia and Norfolk
Island. Hector Busby is of mixed Pakeha and Maori heritage, He is from the Iwi of Te Rarawa and
Ngati Kahu and up until his passing was acknowledged as the most senior Rangatira o Te Rarawa.
Hector was knighted in 2018 for services to Maori.

achievements with waka in unifying the people of the north (6) Te Tohu a Te Waka Toi 2013 to
recognise contributions to revitalising heritage Maori arts.
