Rapunga Kupu Akoako: (korero taken from "Boroughdale Murray, the
beginning of a NZ dynasty") Te Ao Sydney Whakairi Ngatai; although his
presence is everywhere, Matakana Island is not the same without him. His
contribution to the lifestyle on the Island had been one of integrity and tenacity.
He believed that to achieve goals one had to do so with purpose and interest. Te
Aos life was full of loving and caring for his family, leading and guiding them to
a better life and education as well as understanding the lives of the Island
                                                                                               Te Ao Ngatai
people. He was very interested in the education of not only his own family, but
all the children, and, was years ahead of his time in striving for the Maori
language to be taught in every home as well as in the schools. All his life he had a certain ideal for his
people. That ideal was the conviction that Maori stood for something unique and valuable to the New
Zealand way of life. He was knowledgeable in all things Maori; history, culture and folklore, more
especially customs and folklore pertaining to the local people.
