Te Aitanga a Ruanui

First Generation

1. RUANUI [2237].
Rapunga Kupu Akoako: (korero taken from the "Tribes of Muriwhenua") Ruanui Tu Tangata,
Mamari Waka made careful preparations for the long journey across the Moana nui a Kiwa.
According to tradition there were 42 warriors on board the Mamari and these were all high ranking
chiefs, while the canoes tohunga was Hou Mai Tawhiti. And so it was that the Mamari glided over
the ocean path with the aid of the taniwha and the karakia of Ruanui and Hou Mai Tawhiti.
Eventually they saw the foaming mouth of the Hokianga. Here the two most powerful taniwha. Ari
te Uru and Niua smoothed the way for the great canoe so that it landed safely on the shores of the
new homeland. It is said that the two taniwha still guard the entrance to the Hokianga harbour, Ari te
Uru living in the cave on the south side and Niua in one on the north. Ever since that time the
captains and tohunga of every canoe passing over the bar had to chant a karakia to these two taniwha
to enlist thier help to ensure a safe passage through that dangerous harbour entrance. It is claimed by
some descendants that when the Mamari landed at Hokianga it did not end its voyage there but after
some time a few people decided to explore the land further south. They left the Hokianga harbour
and began thier journey down the turbulent seas of the west coast. Unfortunately for them they did
not get very far, for the children of Tawhirimatea, the god of the winds, whistled up the children of
Tangaroa, the god of the sea, and together they romped until the waves became great billows that
went seething up the sands to the shore. When the Mamari was off Riripo beach, one of these huge
breakers caught it up and threw it into the foam and swept it up the beach. There to this day is a
place called Omamari to mark the spot where the Mamari was wrecked.
