Te Aitanga a Ruanui

Whakaruru marena Rahiri [3986] [MRIN: 1531], son of Te Hau [3987] and Ihenga Paraoa [3988].
Rahiri was born in Whiria Hill, Hokianga.
Rapunga Kupu Akoako: (korero taken from "the tribes of muriwhenua") Eponymous
Ancestor; of Ngapuhi Iwi. When he became a man he captured the strongly fortified pa on Whiria
Hill and drove its occupants Ngati Awa away from the north. For much of his life he lived with his
people in this pa.The remains of its fortifications are still to be seen and a handsome monument to
his memory now stands upon the summit. Rahiri had two wives; Ahuaiti, Ngai Tahuhu iwi and
Whakaruru (some say he had a third wife by the name of Moetonga, sister to Whakaruru). From this
marriage to Ahuaiti descend many famous Ngapuhi chiefs, including Patuone, Tamati Waka Nene,
Muriwai and Ahuriri. The Ngati Wai tribe claim relationship to Rahiri through his frist marriage as
Ahuaiti was related to thier Ngati Manaia forebears. From this marriage to Whakaruru is descended
the well known Ngaitawake tribe of Kaikohe.
