Teaching

             Timeline

             GROUNDWORK
Before conducting this laboratory exercise, the details of The Investigation should be shared with the class to
provide the context of the crime. Covering this material once should be sufficient for all laboratory modules.

               DAY 1

               COVER MATERIAL IN THE FORENSIC
               DNA TECHNOLOGY BACKGROUND

Explain how DNA is collected at crime scenes, why DNA amplification is necessary, and how PCR
amplification works. If you have long class periods (over an hour) wait and explain how DNA migrates during
the portion of the lab when students are watching the DNA migrate in the gel.

               DAY 2-4

               LAB PROCEDURE

The DNA Typing kit is a flexible kit, with several stopping points for teachers who have short class periods
or slow gel electrophoresis apparatuses. The following instructions will assist you in determining how to
organize this kit for your class.
