For some regular verbs, it is difficult to form the third person
singular simply by adding –s. In these cases, we need to ad –es
to make it easier to say the verb. For example:

brush brushes
mix mixes
dress dresses
touches touches
And when a regular verb ends in a –y that has consonant before
it, the third person singular form of the verb becomes –ies. For
example:

carry carries
try tries
copy copies
hurry hurries
bully bullies
However, if there is a vowel before the –y ending of the verb, the
third person singular only needs –s to be added, for example,
stay/stays, pray/prays, obey/obeys
