Beers with our Founding Fathers
Five elected representatives from each colony (i.e. House of
Representatives) and two representatives from the colonial
assembly (i.e. Senate)*
*In the forthcoming Constitution, senators were originally
appointed by state legislatures to be sure the impartial
representation of the people. Beginning in 1828, several
sessions of Congress attempted to amend the Constitution
for the direct elections of senators. In 1913 the
Seventeenth Amendment doing so was ratified by the
states.
This new Continental Conference would meet and draft the
Continental Charter for the purpose of independence and
forming a new government for the United Colonies. In this
new government would be a Congress.
Congress would be comprised of a proper number of
representatives from districts within each colony; possibly
30 delegates from each colony for a total of 390
representatives.
Congress would meet annually and elect a president, by
lottery. When a president was elected, their colony would
be removed for the next election.
The passing of laws and election of a president would
require a three-fifths vote; no simple majority.
Common Sense was not well received or appreciated by
everyone. John Adams found it too Democratic, yet the points Paine
made were integrated into oral arguments supporting
