8 IH is a travel company which sells European coach holidays to customers all
over the world. The company has doubled in size over the last two years, due in
part to an acquisition of a major competitor which was loss making, but also
because of a trend towards coach holidays caused by several air traffic control
strikes and terrorist threats to air travel.
IH is aware that given its new size and complexity, there is a risk it has
outgrown its IT systems. Management are also aware that some of the
acquisition’s systems are still operating alongside IH’s own systems with
periodical manual transfer of data being necessary to reconcile the two.
IH have therefore decided to invest in new IT systems and the IT director has
suggested that a ‘phased changeover’ is carried out to prevent disruption to the
business and minimise risks of lost transactions.
Which of the following statements about IH’s approach to implementing
new systems is true? Select all that apply.
A If there is a problem with the new system in any particular department or
division, the IT staff will able to deal with the problems one at a time.
B This method will be costly since it involves inputting data twice and
possibly employing more staff to do this.
C The pilot department or division could be using direct or parallel
changeover.
D Phased changeover is most appropriate when the two systems are very
different or it is too expensive to run two systems in parallel.
E Since all departments or divisions will be staggered with respect to
receiving the new system, the method can be very time consuming.
