                           Managing change





               3.1   The difficulty in managing the change process

               Understanding the factors that impact on change management can be complex.
               However, even when a manager has a good understanding of the context of change
               within their organisation, they still need to be able to successfully implement the
               change itself.


               Given the conflicting views of different stakeholders achieving change within an
               organisation is often difficult and prone to failure.


               3.2   Lewin’s three-stage model


               The three-stage model of change was proposed by Kurt Lewin in the 1950s. He
               argued that, in order for change to occur successfully, organisations need to
               progress through three stages.

               This process includes unfreezing habits or standard operating procedures, changing
               to new patterns and refreezing to ensure lasting effects.
