Chapter 2

                           Alternatives to the rational/formal

                           approach

               2.1 Alternative approaches

Factors such as the increase in uncertainty have led organisations to abandon the
rational approach to strategy in favour of alternative approaches which are more
adaptable to the changing nature of the environment in which the organisation is
operating. There are a number of alternatives to the rational approach.

               2.2 Emergent approach - Mintzberg

Under the emergent approach a strategy may be tried and developed as it is
implemented. If it fails a different approach will be taken. This is likely to result in a
more short-term emphasis than with the rational model. To successfully use the
emergent approach, the organisation needs to have a culture of innovation.

                                                      Unrealised

                              Intended Deliberate Realised
