EXERCISE 2 (HUMAN RESOURCES)
TRIGGER
This morning you receive the following email from Ethan Henson.

From: Ethan Henson (Operations Director)

Subject: Human resources
Hi
I would like your help on two issues. Your background makes me think you are the best person to
ask.
Human resources (HR)
A typical GymFiT gym has two employees, a manager and an assistant manager, who manage the
running of the gym. Recent customer feedback has identified the need for us to consider an
additional member of staff being onsite at our larger gym premises. Just yesterday we received a
comment in the suggestion box at one of our larger sites saying that a member ‘walked around
for nearly 15 minutes before locating a manager, and even then he was busy for the next 10
minutes!’
I have to say, this feedback has only confirmed what we already knew – some of our larger sites
are crying out for increased staff presence. In light of this, and due to the fact that we are finding
more and more suitable properties for new gyms, our thoughts have turned to considering a
recruitment campaign.
I would appreciate your thoughts as to how we can organise an effective recruitment campaign to
ensure we obtain staff with the necessary skills. Whilst we strongly believe in attracting people of
the highest calibre, we are also striving for cost efficiencies so please bear in mind we will not get
the go ahead for a large budget for this.
Having a dedicated HR professional
I would like to consider the advantages of having a dedicated HR person at GymFiT so that I can
put the idea forward to Bertram for discussion. I’m clued up on what the drawbacks would be,
but need some help identifying the key benefits. What can a dedicated HR professional do for us?
I would be interested to hear whether or not you think this would be a step in the right direction
for GymFiT. Please add this into your report.
Many thanks.
