ORGANISATIONAL MANAGEMENT
(E1) PRACTICE TASKS
EXERCISE 1 (FINANCE FUNCTION)
TRIGGER
You have just returned from a meeting with the rest of the finance team. The meeting was held by
Juliette Goh, Finance Director.
The meeting agenda covered the usual issues in terms of current workloads, reporting deadlines and a
review of bad debts before moving on to ‘any other business’.
One of the more senior members of the team asked Juliette what was happening with respect to
recruitment of finance staff. Everyone seems to be overworked and there seemed to be a general
consensus that change within the department could bring about opportunities for the whole team.
Juliette responded that she would be working on reviewing the team and advertising a new role within
the next month.
Shortly after returning to your desk you receive the following email:

Subject: The Finance Function at VitaMine
Thanks for attending the meeting today. As discussed, we will shortly be looking to recruit a new
team member in our relatively small Finance Department to try and ease everyone’s workload -
including mine! I don’t want to rush this appointment as I think it is a great opportunity for us to
reassess the team, considering our role within the company has changed very little since its
formation. It is important to ensure we have the right elements and are capable of performing the
necessary tasks for the company right now but also as we grow and develop.
What I would like you to do is draft a report covering the appropriate components of a finance
function for a company such as ours.
I have also caught wind of the fact that the directors have been discussing a potential change to
the organisational structure here at Vitamine. They are considering changing the organisational
structure from the current functional structure to a divisional structure. With this in mind, I’d like
to be fully clued up on the implications of this change. How would it suit our current position and
how would we see ourselves benefitting from this potential change?
