                           Big Data





               7.1   Definition

                             There are several definitions of Big Data, with the most commonly used
                             referring to large volumes of data beyond the normal processing,
                             storage and analysis capacity of typical database application tools.
                             Although Big Data does not refer to any specific quantity, the term is
                             often used when speaking about petabytes and exabytes of data.

                             The definition can be extended to incorporate the variety of types of
                             data involved. Big Data will often include much more than simply
                             financial information and can involve other organisational data which is
                             operational in nature along with other internal and external data which is
                             often unstructured in form.


               7.2   The three Vs



                             There are four defining characteristics of Big Data:
