CIMA AUGUST 2018 – STRATEGIC CASE STUDY
Technological
• Increasing number of titles switching to digital platforms
• Paywall models, meaning subscribers get access to digital platforms only if they have paid
via standing order/direct debit
• More advertising is being done online, representing fall in revenues (or a new opportunity)
for newspaper publishers
• Data analytics becoming increasingly important – publishers need to prove to advertisers
that spending on their platform is cost effective
• General IT security is critical in the face of well-publicised events (TalkTalk, NHS etc.).
Publishers cannot afford for stories not yet released to be hacked/ subscriber details
being illegally accessed.
• Improved availability of broadband/4G makes digital platforms more accessible
Environmental
• Increased focus on recycling means waste paper becoming less of an issue
• Waste disposal concerns at print factories e.g. ink getting into water supplies
• Printing newspapers requires lots of electricity – negative impact on environment
• Digital newspapers avoid all of the above.
Legal
• Health & Safety legislation in the workplace with regards to the print factories
• Possible litigation in the event that stories published prove inaccurate/defamatory
• Journalists can belong to a trade union. Attempts to reduce staff levels may be met with
resistance.
