Position and gap analysis

Foresight

Foresight involves going beyond forecasting and trying to identify possible
ways in which the future of the organisation could develop.

Techniques include (in addition to those included within section 3):

 visioning – develop a mental image of the future organisation

 scenario planning (see section 5)

 morphological analysis – investigation of the components of a large-
scale problem

 relevance trees – start with a clear goal and work back to
determining what needs to be changed

 role-playing – a group are given a scenario and asked to behave as if
they believe this situation is real.

4.1 Advantages of gap analysis

Advantages are given by the 5Cs:

 communication – bringing together groups of people

 concentration – on the longer term

 coordination – enabling different groups to harmonise their future
R&D activities

 consensus – creating agreement on future direction

 commitment – to the results and who will be responsible for
achieving them.
