80 EarlyWimpel.Germany,[1765]
Wimpel (belt) for a Torah scroll made from a baby's diaper from his circumcision, according to the custom of German Jewry. Germany, 1765.
Speci cations: Linen, embroidery in colored threads with the baby׳s name, pictures of deer, a Torah scroll and a marriage can- opy. Decorated with pleasant calligraphic lettering in a range of shades:“Binyamin Zvi son of Rabbi Dov, born on 26 Av [August 1765], may he grow to Torah, marriage and good deeds Amen Selah.״ Length: 375 cm. Width: 17 cm.
Unique Features: e wimpel before us appears to be one of the earliest surviving wimpels. e Israel Museum׳s wimpel collection consists of over 40 wimpels, but only three of them were made before this one.
Background: According to the custom, on the child׳s rst visit to the synagogue at the age of one or three, a short ceremony is held in which the diaper is given to the synagogue as a gift. When the child celebrates his Bar Mitzva at the age of 13, he is called to read from the Torah scroll tied with his diaper. e custom was rst mentioned in the book Mingahei Maharil in 1545 and was prevalent in Germany, in the areas of Bohemia and Moravia, Switzerland and Denmark until the 19th century.
Condition: Moderate- ne, minimal stains and tears, a new linen lining was sewn onto the rear side to protect and strengthen the original cloth.

וימפל [אבנט] לספר תורה אשר נעשה מחיתול של תינוק בברית מילה כמנהג יהודי אשכנז. גרמניה, תקכ״ה [1765].
מפרט: בד פשתן רקום בחוטים צבעוניים עם שם התינוק, ציורים של צבי, ספר תורה וחופה וכיתוב מעוטר בכתב קליגרפי נאה בגוונים שונים: “בנימן צבי בן הר״ר דוב שליט נולד במז״ט ביו׳ כו אב תצהל [08.1765] יגדל לתורה ולחופה ולמעשים טובים אמן סלה״. אורך: 375 ס״מ. רוחב: 17 ס״מ.
מאפיינים יחודיים: הוימפל שלפנינו, ככל הנראה, הוא אחד הוימפלים הקדומים ביותר שנשתמרו. באוסף הוימפלים במוזיאון ישראל מצויים למעלה מ 40 וימפלים, אך רק שלושה מהם נוצרו לפני וימפל זה.
רקע: על פי המנהג, בעת ביקורו הראשון של הילד בבית הכנסת בגיל שנה או שלוש שנים באשכנז/גרמניה, נערך טקס קצר שבו ניתן החיתול כמתנה לבית הכנסת. בחגיגת בר המצווה בגיל שלוש עשרה, עם עלייתו לתורה, נתכבד הילד בקריאת התורה מתוך ספר התורה שנקשר בחיתולו. המנהג הוזכר לראשונה בספר מנהגי המהרי״ל בשנת 1545, והיה מקובל למעשה בגרמניה, אזורי בוהמיה ומורביה, שוויץ ודנמרק,
עד המאה הי״ט.
מצב: בינוני-טוב, מעט כתמים וקרעים, בצדו האחורי נתפרה בטנת פשתן חדשה לשמירה ולחיזוק הבד המקורי.
