TABLE 2 SUMMARY OF WORKSTREAM A ELEMENTS
H100: WORKSTREAM A PROJECTS DESCRIPTION
Polyethylene (PE) materials A testing programme to evaluate PE pipe, fittings and jointing techniques specific to
and jointing techniques the construction of SGN’s hydrogen demonstration network and to determine their
performance with hydrogen when compared to natural gas.
Characteristics of hydrogen An investigation into the behaviour of leaked hydrogen in the subsurface and property
via physical testing and analysis.
Consequence testing A testing programme examining the possible consequences of an uncontrolled hydrogen
escape when it ingresses into a property. Also a review of SGN’s emergency process and
its suitability for hydrogen distribution.
Odorant and gas detection An evaluation of natural gas odorants currently available and being developed that have
the potential to be used with 100 per cent hydrogen. Suitable candidates selected, and a test
programme developed to evaluate and select a suitable odorant for the H100 demonstration.
A review of portable gas detection instruments that can be used to detect hydrogen and
natural gas that are suitable for use by SGN’s emergency and engineering teams.
Hydrogen logistics Modelling of the demand, hydrogen generation and storage, using an average dwelling
heat demand and data from commercially available technologies.
Safety case A review of GS(M)R and SGN’s relevant procedures and standards to produce a
compliance framework.
Safety case review An independent review of the demonstrations contained within and made by SGN’s
H100 safety case. It will be assessed against the safety case assessment criteria
contained within GS(M)R.
Academic partnership A review of reports by independent experts will be carried out. Once validated
the results will be disseminated to a wider audience via peer reviewed article and
specialised press.
Stakeholder engagement Ensure all stakeholders are aware of the project, understand its objectives and have the
opportunity to contribute and collaborate.
Metering validation The development of a testing strategy of current UK gas meters to provide adequate
safety and performance data to determine the fitness for purpose of the current
population of UK gas meters for safe and accurate operation with hydrogen.
HyCORAL – Commercial and A regulatory and commercial roadmap aimed at supporting delivery of the project’s
regulatory demonstration phase.
Transportation of debris in An investigation into the impact of increased gas velocities of hydrogen when compared
pipelines to natural gas during distribution.
Risk assessment to compare An investigation providing qualitative information on the relative risks of natural gas
the visibility of hydrogen and hydrogen fires, particularly regarding the visibility of the flames.
and natural gas fires
Hydrogen gas detection SGN will work with a manufacturer to develop a portable gas detection instrument that
instrumentation can be used to detect hydrogen gas and is suitable for use by SGN’s emergency and
engineering teams.
Hydrogen excess flow valve An excess flow valve (EFV) suitable for fitment to low pressure hydrogen service pipes
will be developed.
The demonstration is envisaged an enduring solution. SGN’s H100 project is looking to
to take place over four to five years. H100 is a critical step that mobilises construct and demonstrate the UK’s first
