songs. We went into the meditation room, chanted Om, and then broke into an array of devotional songs accompanied by loud drumming and the clanking of bells and cymbols. I was mindless of the patient who was waiting for me on the other side of the wall. When I finally came back to earth and noticed that I was 10 minutes late for the appointment, I excused myself and quickly went to the waiting room. It was completely empty. The door to the outside was slightly ajar, which was evidence of what I can only assume was a very frightened patient wondering what in the world happened to his weird doctor. I had to learn to be more sensible.
I have since seen many people get themselves into serious emotional trouble, such as depression, panic aacks, and even delirium with hallucinations and delusions, because of the inappropriate practice of spirituality in a strained and fanatic manner, devoid of common sense and healthy discrimination. Remember, be balanced!
Even Pundits Make Mistakes
It takes immense faith, steadiness, and courage to offer all to God with renunciation of all aachment to the self. Swami says that of the great pundits who expound the Bhagavad Gita, not even one in a million actually understands this teaching.
In his Gita Vahini (Swami’s commentaries on some of the chapters of the Bhagavad Gita), Swami relates Krishna’s promise about protecting those who offer everything to Him.
Whoever among devotees dedicates all acts to Me with no other thought, whoever meditates on Me, serves Me, worships Me, remembers Me, know that I am always with him, ever providing for him in this world and the next; I bear the burden of his welfare. (SSB, Gita Vahini, chap. 18)
