the spiritual dimension and also in the use of medications. I assured him that the use of appropriate medications in psychiatry is not contrary to a spiritual approach. Sensible spirituality invites reason, analysis, and practical knowledge. Spirituality embraces effective traditional methods and then goes beyond, such as using approaches that quiet and control the mind through non-stimulating diets, hatha yoga, meditation, and devotion to name a few.
Seeing their doubts I said, “One reason many scientists have difficulty accepting the spiritual dimension is because investigating it forces the mind to confront death and mortality, which is frightening. Also, the mind can only compare and contrast, it cannot measure or understand anything that is beyond duality. The spiritual dimension is so vast that the mind loses its bearings trying to understand it. This weakening of confidence in the supremacy of the mind is frightening to many scientists. Even so, it is worthwhile to consider Sai Baba’s greatness. There is so much evidence that Sai Baba extends beyond time, space, and all limitations. If the evidence is true, it implies that man also has the potential to experience bliss and even to transcend death.”
The audience seemed a bit cool. I looked over to my wife, Sharon, who gave me a big smile that warmed my heart.
I noticed Professor Belkin thumbing through my two books, appearing serious and thoughtful. Dr. Belkin rose and thanked me for my interesting talk and then said, “I do believe that our fear of death is very, very crucial. I also believe it is one of the reasons we do not look more deeply into the area of spirituality.” Surprised by this comment, I wondered if there was anything more on his mind. Later I learned that he had a heart condition and was probably referring to his own mortality. He then brought the meeting to a close.
As we le the room, faces lightened and people gathered around me. They wanted to know more about Sai Baba, his life, his miracles, and his teachings. Soon, almost the entire group was standing around me. I was ushered into a smaller meeting
