As Krishna
Dr. Jack Hislop, author of three books on Sai Baba1, related to me a personal experience he had when in the presence of Sai Baba, a story I have asked him to repeat over and over.
During a car trip, Dr. Hislop, who was seated in the front, turned his head to the back to look at Swami (a
name of respect and affection for Sai Baba). It is
hard to be in Swami’s presence and not be drawn
to look at him. As his eyes fell on Swami, what he saw was the most beautiful, most handsome, and striking male form that he had ever
seen. Dr. Hislop, overcome
by this vision, described his
feelings, “It twisted my heart;
he was so beautiful.” The color
of his skin was dark blue and the
form was so enchanting and delightful that Dr. Hislop could not turn his eyes away. He sat transfixed and could only soly whisper, “What is that dark blue color, Swami?”
Although Swami was seated beside
others in the back, Dr. Hislop could only
conclude that they did not see the same sight, or they would have been spellbound as well. Swami simply replied, “It is the kind of blue that one sees when looking into the fathomless, such as gazing up into the endless sky or down into the vast depth of the ocean.” Years later, Swami told Dr. Hislop that the form he saw was that of Lord Krishna.
As Shiva
Professor N. Kasturi, Swami’s biographer, told me of his personal experience. He was discussing the nature of Lord Shiva with Swami and was having difficulty understanding a certain point. Swami asked Kasturi to look at him. As Kasturi’s
