like a direct, personal experience of Swami’s love to capture and give us the courage to launch ourselves confidently on the spiritual path and to find our own internal divine love. He is the ultimate example of man’s divinity, and his love, the most poignant teaching.
My first awakening to this insight occurred during my first trip to see Sai Baba in 1972. Though interested in Swami’s miraculous powers, somehow I became dejected when I listened to his teachings about morality. When he spoke about the importance of leading a life centered on wholesome values, my mind resisted. Funny that a psychiatrist should resist such an obviously appropriate teaching. Then again, we are in a very dark age, and many are unclear about the importance of values.
It was at the end of a 90-minute discourse, and many people surrounded Swami. I retreated into a room some distance away from him and the crowd of devotees. I was deeply disturbed and seriously considered leaving the ashram and India. Suddenly, Swami came into the room and walked directly toward me. Although others were present, it was obvious that he was coming to me. I could see in his eyes and smile that he understood my mind, with all its doubts and confusion, and
