that he chose this particular time to make personal, heart-to- heart contact with me. He extended his hand, which held two small pieces of candy, and said, “Sweets, sweets, eat.”
Instantly, my despair turned into exquisite happiness, recognizing how both omnipresent and personal his love truly is. I was a devotee from that moment on, and the candy was very, very sweet.
A few days aer this experience, while siing with a friend away from the crowds, I fell deeply into thought. Struck by the inexplicable force of Swami’s power and love, the idea came to me that the laws governing the spiritual dimension were more real than the laws of physics. I was becoming aware that the outer world was impermanent and that a spiritual path could lead to the absolute. I was awakening to the truth that beyond the transient is the unchanging eternal God, who is my own soul. What were the spiritual laws that would guide me to this goal?
As I pondered these thoughts, I felt something stir in front of me. I opened my eyes and, to my amazement, there stood Swami. Quietly, and ever so slightly swaying back and forth, he stood with his arms bent at the elbows and extended toward me, palms up, moving slowly in a circular motion in the air. There was a sublime smile on his face. He was a picture of ecstasy and peace.
I was overcome with this experience of Swami’s omnipresence and his loving transcendental response to my thoughts. Swami stood in this pose of sublime peace for about fieen seconds and then turned and walked away. I was le with a deep love for him and a heightened motivation to fully understand and practice his teachings about love and my own divinity.
So began my deep inquiry into the laws of love that are more real than the laws of physics. From this inquiry, I have chiseled out of the vastness the nine elements that have helped me understand and practice his teachings.
