AWARDS AND REAwards and Recognitions
Each year, we take pride in honouring the achievements of all members of the BTRC in their
progress against brain tumours. In 2023-2024, we are particularly proud to announce multiple
awards and recognitions received by our dedicated Principal Investigators. We are excited to
highlight the following outstanding accomplishments and congratulate the awardees for their
continued contributions to advancing our collective mission.
Dr. Peter Dirks
Co-recipient of the 2023 Robert L. Noble Prize, awarded by the Canadian
Cancer Society for outstanding achievements in basic biomedical cancer
research. The Robert L. Noble Prize is named in honour of Dr. Robert L.
Noble, an esteemed Canadian investigator whose pioneering research in
the 1950s led to the discovery of vinblastine, one of the most effective
treatments for Hodgkin lymphoma at the time. Dr. Dirks was also awarded
the Lister Prize from the University of Toronto’s Department of Surgery,
recognizing his lifetime of outstanding and continuing productivity of
international stature in research.
Dr. Cynthia Hawkins
Elected as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. This
honour acknowledges individuals who demonstrate outstanding leadership
and achievement in Canada’s academic health sciences. Fellowship in the
Academy is regarded as one of the highest distinctions within the Canadian
health sciences community, symbolizing a commitment to advancing the field
and enhancing the well-being of health sciences in Canada. This esteemed
recognition underscores Dr. Hawkins’ remarkable contributions to paediatric
brain tumour research and her dedication to improving patient outcomes
while fostering innovation in the health sciences.
