praise the innocence of childhood...
Anyway, I was five and in Kindergarten. In those days a child was able to be free and “safe” to walk to the school bus stop even if it truly was a half mile walk on a rural road. At my pick up stop we had a gas station, truck stop restaurant and a corner store. The store meant penny candy and treats – I’m sure there were other adult grocery products there, too, but at five, I sure didn’t notice or care – only the treats !
I recall one day in the late spring early summer, my mother gave me some money to buy a treat while I was waiting for my bus. My neighbour playmate Doris and I always walked together as we were both in the same class. On this particular day, she also had some money for a treat. It was a warm day but Doris was wearing her brand new tan all-weather type coat. It was beautiful. I loved it and was probably a bit jealous. Well, we got to our pick up stop, went in and bought our treat and then went back to wait for the bus. I ate my treat – ALL OF IT! Doris laughed at me as she put half of her treat in the pocket of her coat. Needless to say, I was mad – at her because she didn’t tell me that she was going to save half and at myself for not thinking of it ! The bus came and then off we went to school. At the end of the day, Mrs. Wilson, our teacher went to the back cloakroom while we were getting our coats and sweaters and heading for the bus. I was ahead of Doris and as I was exiting the cloakroom I heard Mrs. Wilson ask who had had the accident and had not gone to the washroom. Nobody answered and she began checking all of us but we were all dry. So what was going on with the puddle on the floor? We soon found out as Doris took her coat off the rack and the huge blue stain from the “saved” half of a blueberry popsicle came to our attention ! I mean who knew at 5 years old that popsicles melted ! Doris cried all the way home !
