I would encourage current players to read through some of the selections
of clippings relating to our 50 years in existence. History is important. It
gives us a sense of heritage and place. Grounding is good. As a Callan
United player you have an obligation to your current teammates and to
those who came before you. I encourage supporters and parents to do
the same.
Callan is ever changing and indeed so is our club. Our philosophy of
everyone being welcome is evident in the amount of people involved born
from outside of Callan. Their input has been invaluable. It makes for a
better world. Our multicultural family is extended this year with the arrival
of Syrian families into our community. In association with the FAI, local
schools and Droichead FRC, Callan United will deliver an intercultural
football programme to schoolchildren early in 2019.
In 2017 Callan United became a company for the first time in order to
facilitate the development of the club. This year was boosted by the
provision by Kilkenny County Council of a 100 year lease of the
Fairgreen. The current committee have moved mountains to ensure that
the club will be in a solid position for decades to come. Yes we are
playing catch up but catching up we are.
No, we are not the biggest or the best club in Kilkenny on the field but we
do things well and we do it our way. We are proud of the way we do it.
We provide young people with a safe fun environment and at the end of
the day, isn't that what sport is all about.
I wish you all another enjoyable season, proud to wear the black and red
hoops and look forward to watching you create many more happy
memories in the next 50 years to come.
