Where in the World are you right now?
We're in our studio in Liverpool working on some remixes and new tracks plus preparing our play lists for Creamfields next weekend!
Can you tell us about your background and how you two got together to make music?
We have been friends for over 20 years, getting together initially because of our mutual love for going out clubbing and house music. We really got to know one another when we went to the Miami Winter Music Conference a few years back and had a blast! We have produced music and DJ’d for a long time individually but about 4 years ago we teamed up to work together in the studio for the first time. We had fun and started making some cool sounds and Son of 8 was born from that.
Who or which artists have influenced your sound?
In the early days it was artists such as Danny Tenaglia, Eric Morillo and Roger Sanchez. More recently Jamie Jones, Seth Troxler, Eats Everything, The Martinez Brothers and Marco Carola. They all share a certain something, playing really cool house music that crosses genres, retains a lot of funk and soul and they are not scared to take risks with the music they play. We aspire to play sets as good as theirs and always push the boundaries while keeping a party feel to the music.
Where did you play your first gig?
Our first gig was at Club Venus in Manchester. It's a venue we've both played separately over the years so it was great to have our first Son of 8 gig there.
What were the main challenges for you when learning to produce music?
Not being musically trained would occasionally slow the process down in the beginning, there was a lot of trial and error in the early days. We have also massively improved our sound and production quality over the past 4 years. So there has been steady improvement and we have learnt how to use lots of new software and kit. Working constantly and keeping things fresh is the biggest challenge.
What releases can we expect from you in the coming months?
We have just released Hanging in the DJ Booth which has wicked remixes from Ki Creighton and Mark Jenkins on our own label 8 House. That track has had huge support from the likes of Richy Ahmed, Sister Bliss, GW Harrison, Sooney, Richie Hawtin to name a few and has been played everywhere in ibiza this year. We have our E.P, Tempo de Fiesta which has already had one of the tracks 'Party Time' featured on David Penn's Ubana Records Ibiza Compilation due out at the end of September. Then early October will see Son of 8's most exciting release to date, Back from Outer Space, which has a mind-blowing remix from Made by Pete. Plus many more exciting releases before the end of the year.....watch this space!
You started your label earlier this year, what prompted you to start this up?
We always planned on launching our own record label at some point in the future. But after the success of Son of 8's first year it just seemed like the perfect time to get started!
