T here are many, many oldskool nights in Ireland, and many more in Dublin. To the point I sort of stayed away as every club and every promoter was putting
them on. Dont get me wrong, I love a bit of oldskool, as much as the next old-timer DJ and fan! But when the scene is flooded with them, you need a break now and then!
I had not been out to an oldskool gig for some time, so when I was invited to cover DJ Pete Bones and a few Irish guys spinnin' some vinyl, I went along to meet the crew!
I arrived at about 11pm, an apt time I think to arrive in when the party is in full swing. Knowing Pete Bones from his 'Ugly Bug' days, I thought for sure the place would be rammed, but much to my supprise, there was not a packed out club, but rather a gaggle of wondering punters. I thought maybe it was going to get busier soon after I arrived, as sometimes Dublin can be a slow starter .
As soon as we arrived, my plus one, and I, we where greeted very warmly, and where immediately introduced, by one of the organisers, to the DJ's and people involved, not having met any of these guys before I was unsure how it was going to go. Derek Cully, one of the promoters, was on the decks, so I said a quick hello, and I was off to leave him to the job. Without futher ado, Derek sorted out a cold drink for both of us, and I went to work, snap time!
By this time I noticed a good few more clubbers had arrived, and although there was no capacity rammed venue, there was a nice crowd in the quaintly small venue. I got some great shots, and our good friend, and Zone Photographer, John Shortt, arrived in and he was snapping away too!
All the support DJ's played some great tunes, and to an ever supporting crowd, by the time Pete Bones came on, the room was fully warmed up, with arm stretching, and bear hugging bodies! It really reminded me of a large house party, that feeling everyone knew everyone, and where there just for a good time, good vibes, and
all pure music heads, one of the nicest bunches of people I have met for a while, and that goes to the promoters, DJ's and all involved. It was a shame the numbers where down, and this is the only reason I have given this night 9/10.
I would recommend checking out History of House any time, they really know how to look after a guest, and create a nice vibe!

WHO IS DEREK CULLY?
I am a DJ and promoter in and around Dublin and just recenlty started to get more and more gigs nationally and internationally.
VINYL, CDS, OR DIGITAL AND WHY?
As I'm DJ'Ing over 20 years now I've a strong love affair with vinyl. I still play vinyl only at oldskool gigs. I think you much stick to 'de roots' when your doing oldskool gigs. I do some gigs with newer material, but my love affair will allway be vinyl.
WHAT IS HISTORY OF HOUSE ALL ABOUT?
When I started History of House, I wanted it to be different from other old skool gigs and not just concentrate on 90s. When we had Brandon Block over we had DJ's that were playing new House stuff including myself which I mixed up stuff from the 90s and right up to the current day.
WHO ARE YOUR INSPIRATIONS?
My inspirations growing up would be Carl cox for one. I seen him in the Ormond, I think it was 1996, that set stuck with me and I tried to mix just like him, practice, practice, practice!!
I sat down with Derek to have a few words about
