Anyhow his record box was at the end of the bed, we were all drinking and I was in my usual menacing mode. I opened the box found the tune, DEEBS looking at me in horror of what I was about to do, telling me DJ's unlimited will never deal with us again if I take his tune. My frank reply was “£600 and flights and he can’t mix, let alone the fact he’s an international superstar DJ. Feck if he costing me that I want my money’s worth”. Then I replaced it with my tune (now that was good gesture) he loved, that I had told him there was only a few off in existence (we had 10 more in our shop LOL).
Needless to say we never heard a thing about it, he must have been happy with the replacement and he did say he had two. Meanwhile I am ripping up dance floors around Scotland with his acetate.
Oh! Yeah and Same hotel in Elgin. After all these years and various changes in management, you tried to sue us for Your £2,000 curtains and a few other antiquaries, that accidentally took light after I tried to prove they were fireproof, as they were doused in alcohol after we had a beer fight. It was me, but hey, what good lawyers we had. Kids don’t try this at home.
More recently we noticed you had some great success with UBIK, how did this start and what have been the highlights so far?
UBIK started in 2008, we needed a good Techno club in the region and we chose the best underground club in the North East (Reading Rooms, Dundee). There are various categories of Techno, but our style wasn’t being played locally and when we opened, all our nights were sold out.
Our best night was when Billy Nasty was our guest at our Halloween special. All different styles merged faultlessly, from tech house through to the industrialism of Nasty. UBIK returns soon with bigger venue, bigger names and a bigger MikeC LOL.
What can we look forward to in the near future from you?
Equinox 21st Anniversary? UBIK? A new Single? lets Wait and see.
You have always encouraged new talent, so which new artistes are making moves in your opinion at the moment and why?
I have always encouraged new local talent
as well as gave them breaks warming up our evenings. I have taken great interest in my nephew’s career (Da General-General Surgery Records), but I knew from an early point he was going places, as he had the talent and media/digital know how to get out there. I told him the easiest way to make a name as a DJ these days is to produce and get recognised by labels.
He now co-runs General Surgery Records with Hard House legend Jon the Dentist, produces under various aliases and has had two No.1s in the HTFR chart for most of this year under the pseudonym Da General & Moggi. Definitely one for the future, with Chris “acid” Mann just signed to the label, who is also from the area and is currently at No.2 in the same chart, so things looking up in the North East of Scotland. There is a vibrant techno scene evolving as well as resurgence of the Acid scene and this label embraces these styles and their status in the digital charts reflects this.
