CHIP FU
BROOKLYN, NYC
From London to Brooklyn we go. This time it’s the turn of the ''True Fu- Shcnicken'' himself, the mighty: Chip Fu.
So many people will trace the origins of your professional career to the Fu Schnickens Crew out of Flatbash Brooklyn.
I'd like to know how you started in music even before the Fu Schnickens, did you grow up in a musical family or environment?
Well my brother used to play music and being from a west Indian family there was so much music being played not just reggae but hip hop and calypso .. I was drawn to it and started writing Liricks from age 11
The Fu-Schnickens were signed to JIVE records back in the 1990s, how was it to be signed to a big label when you guys where so young in what people describe as hip hops ''Golden Era''.
Oh, it was cool to be signed and have a big machine behind our music . It helped people I understand who we are because they marketed our music well.
You've worked with some great artists and
stars in your time: Phife Dawg, Pete Rock, Jedi mind tricks even Shaquile O'Neal to name check just a few. Is there anyone around that you'd love to connect with for future music projects?
Damian Marley and Eminem at this point since I do both I think that they are the only artists that would push me. I think when it comes to music I cover it all so I would like to work with artist who I know would put me in a different head space and challenge me.
How do you release your music nowadays? Can you tell us a little about the label/ Company over in NYC.
Well I run my own indie label and I'm happy with what we have accomplished I'm glad that I'm able to release music faster and whenever I want . I think the best thing is in able to prepare and take my time and not rush .. No deadlines I just make sure it's good enough for the people then release it .
Also we are aware that you are currently a MAATH teacher:
(Music Appreciation Art Time and Healing) Can you explain this further for the Zone Mag / Ragga-Stack readers please?
(Chip Fu)
MAATH is a workshop school initiative that I created to teach kids about the correlation between music and their own school subjects . It was my way of giving back and creating a platform to engage our youth and keep them motivated. We are now in a few schools as well as housing projects as well.
Thanks Chip Fu, have you any shout outs or tunes projects to plug? Get it in now :)
As far as projects new album is coming along with a few new singles I did some work with snow for his new album and there is tons to speak about but I won't jinx it lol but trust me the projects and brand new Collab records I've done are both in hip hop and reggae I think the setup is perfect for what I'm about to do I want to show how versatile an artist I am. I want to be called to do more than just hip hop and I think the projects I have coming out will help me to achieve that I think what people do is they put me in a box and expect one thing from me but trust there is lots more to me as an artist and I shall prove it.
