Ointment Semi-solid preparation consisting of medications Skin/ Semi-solid
dispersed or dissolved in anhydrous basis.
Paint Medicated preparation for application to the skin or Skin/ Liquid
mucous membranes. Usually contains substances with
antiseptic, astringent, caustic or analgesic properties.
Paste Preparation with a high proportion of finely powdered Skin/ Semi-solid
medicaments mixed WITH a basis made of soft/liquid
paraffin (oily base) or glycerol/mucilage/soap (non-oily
base).
Pessary Preparation suitably shaped for vaginal administration. Vagina/ Solid
Contains medications, which are usually acting locally.
Suppository Medicated preparation suitable shaped for rectal Rectal/ Solid
administration.
6.3 STORAGE, PACKAGING AND LABELLING REQUIREMENTS
Several extemporaneous products will require a specific storage conditions and need to be
specified in the label. The storage of certain products sometimes will be available in the
reference book but for others, it is based on common knowledge or experience. In the absence
of any guidance from the reference book, the table below can be used as a general guide.
