 Ionic Bonding
IONIC BONDING: Valence electrons are transferred from a metal atom to a nonmetal atom.
Metals → nonmetals
Na (metal) has one valence electron. Cl (nonmetal) has 7 valence electrons. Na will transfer its one valence electron to Cl. Cl will then have 8 valence electrons.
• Na becomes Na+ because it gave away an electron. • Cl becomes Cl− because it took in an electron.
• The positive ion (Na+) and the negative ion (Cl−)
are attracted to each other, so they bond.
