Covalent Bond
COVALENT BOND: Two nonmetals share electrons.
They don’t transfer electrons! They share them. To find out if the bond is covalent:
1. Find the difference of electronegativities. 2. If the difference is less than 1. 7, the bond
is covalent.
(If the difference is more than 1.7, the bond is ionic.)
• Or you can use our trick: Covalent bonds are between a nonmetal and a nonmetal.
Friends (cos) are similar
and have only small differences between themselves. Covalent bonds have a smaller difference of electronegativity than ionic bonds.
Covalent: they become cos. They share.
