   Oxidation States for Oxidation
   • Reffy, Periodic Table (p. 9) shows the oxidation state of each element on the top right corner.
This card is review + a little new info.
Giving is a positive thing.
When an element gives (loses) an electron, it forms a positive ion.
  • Metals lose electrons to form complete outer shells.
Li has 1 valence electron, and will therefore lose one electron to form a stable shell.
• Li’s oxidation number is +1 because it
loses 1 electron.
• Li becomes oxidized because loses an
electron. (LEO – lose electron oxidation)
• Li is a reducing agent because it caused
the electrons to be reduced.
