Reduction
REDUCTION: A reaction in which an element gains electrons
During reduction:
1. The element’s oxidation number decreases.
This happens because the more electrons the element has, the more negative its charge becomes.
2. The electrons that are gained end up on the left side of the equation.
Fe + e- Fe1- (e- = an electron)
There are many Regents questions on this topic.
To remember all this information, memorize GER left.
• GER: Gains electrons – reduction. (This means that during reduction, electrons are gained.)
• Left: The electrons go to the left side of the equation
• : The oxidation number goes down.
So repeat GER left(GER left down) ten times and you’re good to go!
