   Oxidation State Review
   • Reffy, Periodic Table (p. 9) shows the oxidation state of each element on the top right corner.
• Element that take in/gain electrons have negative oxidation states.
O’s valence shell contains 6 valence electrons. Therefore, O takes in another 2 electrons to make a complete outer shell of 8.
• O’s oxidation number is -2 because it took in/
gained 2 electrons.
• O was reduced because it gained electrons.
(GER – gain electrons reduction)
• O is an oxidizing agent because it caused the
electrons to be oxidized.
This card is review + a little new info.
Taking is a negative thing.
When an element takes (gains) an electron, it forms a negative ion.
