Electroplating
ELECTROPLATING: Coating an object with a layer of metal electrolytically
Electroplating is an application of an electrolytic cell.
This process is used to coat an object with a metal (such as copper, silver, gold)
Coating a spoon with silver (silver-plating).
• The object that you want to plate (e.g., the spoon) will become the cathode.
• The metal that you are plating with (e.g., silver) will be the anode.
• The anode will keep getting oxidized and shrinking in mass.
• The cathode will keep getting reduced and gaining in mass.
CO – Cathode is the object being plated. AM – Anode is the metal used to do the plating.
