Structural Formula Example
Draw the structural formula for pentane.
1. There are 5 carbon atoms (Table P, p. 7).
Draw a line of 5 C’s.
2. There are 12 hydrogen atoms (Table Q, p. 7 –
general formula for alkane) Attach 12 H’s to the line of C’s.
The structural formula shows the structure of the molecule.
