Structural Formula of Alkenes and Alkynes
Alkenes have a double bond and alkynes have a triple bond between two of their C atoms ( Reffy, Table Q – p. 7). How do you know where to put the double or triple bond? Easy! They give you a number in front of the molecule name. Count that number of ‘C’ molecules and place the double or triple bond there.
3-hexene
We placed the double bond between the 3rd and 4th ‘C’ (3-hexene).
• Whenever you see a double bond between C’s, you know the compound is an alkene. • Whenever you see a triple bond between C’s, you know the compound is an alkyne.
