   Molecular, Structural, and Condensed Structural Formula Example
  Find the molecular, structural, and condensed structural formula of 1-propene.
• Molecular formula:
Propene has 3 carbon atoms (Table P) and 6 hydrogen atoms (Table Q – general formula of
alkene: CnH2n). The molecular formula is C3H6.
• Structural formula:
Draw 3 C’s and attach 2 H’s to each C. Each C has 4 lines coming out of it. The double bond is between the first and second ‘C’ (1-propene means that the double bond is on the first carbon).
• Condensed structural formula:
There are 2 H’s attached to the first C, 1 to the second C, and 3 to the third C. The condensed molecular formula is CH2=CH–CH3.
