Another Molecular, Structural, and Condensed Structural Formula Example
Find the molecular, structural, and condensed structural formula of 1-ethyne. • Molecular formula:
Ethyne has 2 carbon atoms (Table P) and 2 hydrogen atoms (Table Q – general formula
of alkyne: CnH2-2n). The molecular formula is C2H2.
• Structural formula:
Draw 2 C’s and attach 2 H’s to them. Each C has 4 lines coming out of it. The triple bond is between the first and second C’s (1-ethyne means that the triple bond is on the first carbon).
• Condensed structural formula:
There is 1 H attached to the first C, and 1 to the second C. The condensed molecular formula is CH ≡ CH
